The crown colony of Gold Coast started to issue stamps in
1875. Nonetheless European trading posts had been established
at least three centuries before, at Elmina for instance. An interesting
historical summary of the conquest of the Asante Empire which
occupied most of the inland part of Gold Coast is "The Fall
of the Asante Empire: The Hundred-Year War for Africa's Gold Coast"
by Robert B. Edgerton (published by The Free Press 1995). The
first edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica (1771) has an entry
for Cape-Coast Castle: "The principal British fort and settlement
on the gold-coast of Guinea, situated under the meridian of London
, in 5 degree N. lat.". The Gold Coast became independant
in 1957 under the name of Ghana.
